ESD Documents – Best Practices

These professional documents were written by our team and are fundamental to the successful implementation of best practices ESD Program.  They consist of two Books, numerous articles, and ESD Best Practice Program Documents. They extend well beyond industry standards to include counter measures for today’s and tomorrow’s technology.

Our Best Practices include an ESD Control Handbook, ESD Inspection Guide and Class 0 SPC instruction. These documents have been developed and refined over a 30 year period through hard earned experience and provide requirements for robust programs including CDM (Charged Device Model), Class 0, CBE (Charged Board Event), CDE (Cable Discharge Event) and advanced automation requirements.  These documents have been the governing documents for many programs including those certified to ANSI/ESD S20.20 and those certified to Class 0 Best Practices.

ANSI/ESD S20.20 Program Plans and Compliance Verification Instructions are customized to the needs of each client.

ESD Documentation Descriptions

  1. ESD Control Handbook – Best Practices

SCOPE:  This Best Practices Electrostatic Discharge Control Handbook is intended to be the controlling document for an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Control program and applies to all facets of a company’s business.  Requirements are established here for sound and cost effective ESD control techniques. This handbook is intended for engineering, management, and training personnel, and can be used to implement local ESD programs. Further details are contained in the Dangelmayer Associates ESD Inspection Guide.

PREFACE: This handbook defines and describes ESD and its effects on electronic devices. ESD causes are explored, numerous sources of static charges found at the workplace are identified, and how these charges threaten sensitive electronic devices are discussed. General requirements are specified for controlling ESD damage, and detailed instructions are given for each technique.

This handbook supports a comprehensive ESD program that an organization can use to ensure all ESD sensitive devices/products are handled according to ESD best practices ESD, and that all new designs will be qualified for adequate designed-in ESD protection.

  1. ESD Inspection Guide - Best Practices

Scope:  The Best Practices ESD Inspection Guide provides guidelines for effectively managing a successful Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Control Program and for handling ESD sensitive components and assemblies. It is a companion document to the Dangelmayer Associates Electrostatic Discharge Control Handbook and contains supplemental requirements not contained in the Handbook.

Preface: This guide is primarily intended for manufacturing sites, suppliers, and sub-contractors. It is also intended for any site that handles, stores, or transports ESD-sensitive components and assemblies. Its intended users are independent auditing teams, a site’s ESD process owner, and the ESD work area inspector.

These guidelines may be tailored to suit the needs of each site, as long as the requirements given in the ESD Control Handbook are not compromised and any modifications have been approved and documented by the ESD process owner.

  1. Class 0 SPC Instruction – Best Practices

Scope:  This manufacturing instruction describes the methods and procedures to be followed during the Statistical Process Control of a Class 0 ESD process and assuring compliance with company requirements and policies.   These requirements apply to all personnel working in or visiting, an ESD protected area.

Preface: This instruction provides the basic statistical process controls for managing a sound Class 0 manufacturing ESD program.  The procedures and frequencies of both visual and electrical inspection procedures are included as well as data sheets for recording the results.  Customization of this instruction will be necessary to harmonize with customer chosen ESD facilities and the associated installation techniques.

  1. S20.20 Program Plan – Customized

SCOPE:  We develop customized plans for each client to provide application appropriate selection of key administrative and technical requirements that will also satisfy S20.20 certification audits.  This plan will be developed to optimize the requirements for quality/reliability and for ease of compliance with ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007.

Preface: Each plan we develop will provide sufficient detail to manage the S20.20 program efficiently while avoiding the pitfalls related to certification.  All of our documents have satisfied S20.20 certification audits on the first try.

  1. S20.20 Compliance Verification Instruction - Customized

SCOPE:  We develop customized compliance verification (CV) instructions for each client to provide cost effective procedures for ensuring the ESD program is being followed as written.

Preface:  This CV instruction goes beyond referencing TR 53 by including easy to follow test procedures and sound sampling methods. Each CV instruction we provide sufficient detail to test the required elements of the S20.20 Plan with minimal training of personnel. This CV instruction will be customized to optimize the efficiency of doing the tests and ensuring compliance with ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007.
